So lets say I am doing a D Major chord which is

D F# and A

How do I progress from there, or am I stuck with only that one chord for D Major?

I basically am learning music right now and I want to understand it better.

if you want something simple and ear pleasing you can go by a simple 2 chords progression of
D Major and G mayor

D F# A -> D G B

my tip would be just try and see what sounds the best for you.

yeah, kind of, but in short jumps
you can use scales to make your chord progressions.
the most ear pleasing is the C major so.. figure out

Learn progressions. And if youthink the jump from one chord to another is off a little bit, just invert it. The chord, not the progression.

Try a simple I IV V. In C major. C F G
Just invert F and G so it sounds subtle and a lot better.
