|
|
Hello.
I have a friend who is somewhat misguided, but I'm not very good at explaining things. He has made a couple of inaccurate (or accurate?) statement about cheat engine. He has made two statements.
1. Cheat Engine is for noobs, script kiddies, etc. anyone who uses CE is a noob. In other words, those who use cheat engine aren't really "hacking".
2. Cheat Engine sucks and WPE is much better. It can even do server sided hacks.
I realize that these statements may sound stupid, biased, etc. These are in the words of my friends, and I do request a means of correcting his assumptions.
Thank you.

He's right, about the default configuration of Cheat Engine
Cheat Engine is NOT a "Hack" tool. It's a reverse engineering and programming tool
Of course, anyone with some basic programming knowledge, or proper resources, can extend Cheat Engine to do all the 'hacking' he's talking about.
An injection at Winsock2.send and recv and you have yourself a packet editor, and hooking a little bit deeper and you will have the packets BEFORE they get encrypted making a lot easier editing
Also, WPE has a hard time making chameleon skins and causing walls to be transparent and showing detailed information about the enemy in the game itself, which is something you can do with CE, IF you know what to do (hooking, processing raw data, etc...)

So in reality I am the misguided one, correct?

Sounds more like your friend doesn't know how to use Cheat Engine and is just dissing it because of it.

| I do understand that he is dissing it, but I would like to explain to him why what he says has no logical basis (if it has no logical basis).

Well his logic is flawed to start with since WPE is a packet editor.
- It will only help with applications that use network connections.
- It will only help with applications that use Winsock.
- It will only help alter packets, nothing more.
Cheat Engine can do all this and more.
- Cheat Engine can be used to refactor parts of an application.
- Cheat Engine can be used to hook API.
- Cheat Engine can be used to read/write to memory.
- Cheat Engine can be used as a packet editor.
- Cheat Engine can be used to hook packet functions at a lower level then WPE to hook the packet flow BEFORE they are encrypted.
- Cheat Engine can be extended indefinitely because it is open source.
The list goes on.

Aha. Now I know that the words "Script Kiddie" are somwhat personally defined, but can you tell me if a professional would find use in CE, and how? Also, why would they use CE?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Script_kiddie
Anyone is free to use CE for the use they see fit. Like I said it can accomplish a lot of things with minor effort. Most use it for convenience when it comes to memory based stuff. Would a professional use it? Sure if they feel the need to or want to use something that will help accomplish what they are doing. Why reinvent the wheel every time you need something?

Not to mention 64-bit support and a good 64-bit debugger that you will hardly find elsewhere...
Plus what DB said, packet editing is easier with CE if you know how to use it, so if he doesn't know how to do it, he is the script kiddie.
By the way, editing packets is not a "server-sided" hack. You just hack the client to send false info, which you can do with packet editor or CE too, but meh, why argue about it.
