So, I got my brothers old Nvidia 9800 GT but it won't find my monitors resolution. I tried to make the custom one but I get a squashed version with an inch or so black line on bottom and top. Any suggestions?

I did, that was the thing that caused the black line. The resolution is sorted now but there seems to be a vertical line of slight blurriness around 2 inches wide going down the centre of my monitor. Would the refresh rate be the problem?

Probably yes. You should make sure it's set to 60hz.

Also do what tan says because it takes a real idiot to not uninstall the old and install the new.

You did install gfx drivers right?

If he went from nVidia -> nVidia he shouldn't have to uninstall the old driver either.

Why wouldn't he have to uninstall the old driver?

actually it probably wouldn't matter whatever you had before, the old drivers will just not do anything if you have new ones & another gfx. Nvidia specifically throws packages with drivers though, e.g I used the same driver (v295.xx) for my 260 as I am right now for my 560.
