Hello I am not sure whether this has or has not been covered. But I am kind of an impasse in my learning, I am most likely, nowhere near as smart as some of the Clever people on this forum by a long shot.

I was trying to write an ASM script to give me increased SETA in X3 - Reunion, but I dont really understand ASM or opcodes all too well. I have read a fair few of the tutorials and I have probably made a tiny bit of progress from what I have learnt from the ones I have thus far read.

It looks like the game X3 - Reunion may(from my perspective) use CRC. (I know its an old game, my good computer blew-up years ago, and I haven't been able to play my old games.)
But I am not sure.
The reason I am not sure, is because I am not sure what constitutes CRC.
Whenever i change the (value) of bytes on the left pane, and I ALT+TAB back into the game in clean-crashes back to the desktop, and all the Hex values red-over.

As a made-up example in the game "Prey" if i were to change:
90 40 21 mov eax,1EF
to
90 40 22 mov ebx,1EF
and the above function didn't change the value of a critical function, or be accessed by any other critical functions then that game wouldn't crash.

What I mean to say is unlike "prey" where I can change its opcodes as long as I dont change the byte length of they're respective hex(in the left panel), "X3 - Reunion" doesn't even like it if I change anything like the value of one, single byte, let alone the opcodes byte length.
You have to put a jmp :whatever: somewhere don't you, to divert it to your script?
But X3 - Reunion seems to be different, despite there only being a year between the two titles.

Is the above mentioned example a sign of CRC, i mean I know the byte (length) cant change without corruption, but can the byte (values) of the opcodes?

Probably not. Recifense has posted a script for X3: TC here:
http://forum.cheatengine.org/viewtopic.php?t=539044

And he didn't include any CRC checks. Probably you are just making a mistake when you are changing the code. I doubt that X3 has CRC checks.

Just open an AA window and copy-paste the script in it.

If the game doesn't use CRC, can someone please explain to me why, when I first searched for a 4Byte Value for my speed in the game It finds the value in 1000+ addresses, I change the value and refine my search by clicking next scan, as is the usual CE procedure, and then I get "No Results Found"

So then I try to search for float, refine my search by clicking next scan, and I get "No results found"

So I tryed a different tactic, I tryed 'Unkown initial value' followed by 'Changed value' and after about a millions years of my life had gone by, (repeating the same steps ad nauseum) I got about 5 value's that changes 400000 times a picosecond.
^^Obviously Rapidly changing pointers of some kind.
And even if they were rapidly changing pointers, I dont know what to do with them.
(I say Obviously, thats kind of exageration on my part I am still not 100% sure what constitutes a pointer, maybe someone could briefly reiterate that piece of information for me)
But if I am to understand that pointers are the value of an address within an address that "points" to another address then I guess I do. Is that right? :-/

Also it doesn't always go straight to "No results found" on the 2nd scan, sometimes it does it on the third. I think highly likely it uses some basic cheat protection, otherwise WHY would I be able to keep changing the value then rescanning to my hearts content a million times in "Prey" and that game being fine???

How could a game just be accidentally made to be cheat proof like that?
Its very improbable!?

The memory integrity checks have nothing to do with the values that you search for. They are checking the codes only.

I didn't say that the developers did not put any anti-cheat or make it harder to find values, that is just natural.

All I say is that the game is not detecting if you are changing the codes. Which is not the same as if you change a value that you find.

Why do game developers put memory integrity checks in they're games, if when the game is being used in singleplayer. Confused
And also what motivation would a games developer have for making it difficult for someone to play the game outside of the way it was intended?

Seems a bit mean.

What goes through they're minds? Confused

Try looking for 2 byte values with fastscan off

And try increased/decreased with that

But really, check out http://forum.cheatengine.org/viewtopic.php?t=539044

There's something about a multiplication of 65536, but that's just a result of misalignment

No idea. There are just as many reasons to allow cheating as forbiding it. In single player games.
