Not that old, it's from the 20's though I think. Looks like a half size french horn but with 3 pistons and a french horn shaped mouthpiece nearly the diameter of a trombone mouthpiece.
Looks like this, at my bro's house atm so I don't remember what brand it is. Mouthpiece looks nothing like that though, really old looking. Case is solid with red felt lining.

Yep. It has more of a dark sad sound than a recent mellophone, but not as round as an actual french horn. I'd say its in the middle, but leaning towards a french horn sound.
