|
|
Can you guys help me put together any build for as cheap as possible? Started a school club where we fix old computers and build new ones for charity and got a grant from the government, but obviously money is limited, so we need to make the computers that we build as cheap as possible.
The stuff inside doesn't have to be great, we're just trying to make as many as possible. Before we got the grant, we used to fix up old Pentium 3s and what not, so anything is an upgrade over that.
Preferably $200 or less for each computer, but a bit more is ok I guess. $250 is the limit.
Thanks in advance.

Isn't this something you should be looking into doing yourself to learn? Seems a bit pointless to start a club to do something if you plan on just having others do it for you every time. Why not discuss parts in your club rather then asking here?

Looking for external input is always a good thing. Why do you think big companies pay so much money to people to help them analyze their sales and make plans for them. Obviously I can't go around everywhere looking up the best deals myself, that would take forever. Furthermore, the club just started. We currently only have 5-6 people in it tentatively. We just met up today and thought up of some ideas, so I'm trying to bring something to the table next week.
Also, just so you know, I did make a build for myself and I have a pretty good idea of what I'm looking for, but I'm sure there are some parts out there that somebody might be able to find for cheaper, hence this thread.
| Code: | CPU ($69.99) - AMD Phenom II X3 720 - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103652

HSF ($19.99) - COOLER MASTER RR-H101-22FK-RA 80mm Long life sleeve bearing CPU Cooler - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103075
Total = $236 before tax |
Chose that CPU because it was one of cheapest and best price per perf CPUs out there, and it can be unlocked to have a 4th core and easily overclocked to become a Phenom II X4 940 at half the price. Basically skimped on the rest of the build, so maybe having a good CPU is redundant.
May decide to go with this http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.735569
instead of that, and it will save us around $90.

Stock HS&F will be fine. Get a small dual core if that's all you have available to spend. Also, that build of yours doesn't include a GPU, and the mobo you picked doesn't have any onboard video, so you're looking more close to $300 for that - and I'm not entirely sure 250W PSU would be enough especially at high loads.

Yes you can get a AMD dual core and unlock it if your lucky, but it's not a good idea to actually do it as you're basically teaching others who don't know anything, they can grab a cheap dual core and turn it to a quad. Once they see what you have done, they will apply it to computer they encounter.
And you're Canadian cause that's newegg.ca not newegg.com

The processor I linked is OEM, so it does not come with the stock HSF.
Shit, I forgot to get a GPU. Guess I'll throw in a HD 5450 for $29.99.

Edit - Actually I think I'll grab this board instead.

$8 more but has onboard graphics and can unlock cores too.
I think the 250W PSU should be enough since my buddy just bought a HP Desktop with a Phenom II X6 1065T in it, and it ran on a 250W PSU. I'll look into it further though.
@kls, I was originally thinking about going for the Phenom II X2 555, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to, since its been a while since these processors came out and I'm not sure if the chances that they will be unlocked successfully is as high as before.
For $3 more, I'd rather pick up the tri core just incase it doesn't unlock. But if money gets real tight, I might just down grade to the Sempron for $40 and try to unlock that to a dual core.
And I'm not sure what you mean about them applying what they saw to their own computers.

Why hasn't anyone linked to ebay? You can get some pretty good items cheap on there weather they are used or new it will usually work really well
