End of school last year, May 20ish, as a gift, my science teacher allowed me to take home a displacement reaction in a test tube. It was a few chunks of aluminum in some copper nitrate. Within a few days, copper "pimples" had formed on the aluminum as was expected. I left it undisturbed in a corner until today, when upon looking at it, I am unsure what I've made. As predicted, the blue colored copper nitrate was now aluminum nitrate, indicated by the clear color but there are some weird...side effects.
1. The liquid is thick, almost like a syrup. The tube was stoppered the entire time, so evaporation has not occurred.
2. The pimpled aluminum is no more, instead, there is a mass of white with copper veins and blue stripes running through it.
3. Right above this mass there are air bubbles that do not move whatsoever. Even when the tube is tilted upside-down, the bubbles are not reached, and there seems to be a barrier between them.
I will record a small video to show you because I cannot explain it further...this is confusing.
I think the area containing the "unbreakable bubbles" is aluminum nitrate nonahydrate formed from the aluminum nitrate. This also explains why the liquid is now syrupy.
