There are plenty of lessons on the net, just do some surfing.
My dad learned how to play guitar in his late 20s. He learned coords by watching people on MTV, back when it WAS MTV. _________________

Just learn the chords.
http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/ The basic chords are G, F, C, A, D, E minor, E Major, B etc, etc.
Learn a couple scales and eventually you'll be able to compose a song. Ive been playing for either 5 or 6 years now and I'm all self-taught.
Also, try to figure out tabs early on too, they can be a lot of fun to play. _________________

If you learn guitar tabs, you will be able to play virtually any song.
I play guitar reasonably well, and am mainly self taught, though my dad has showed me some things like how to play Thunderstruck and stuff. _________________

I have played guitar for over 20 years of my life. I have taken exactly 4 lessons in that time. It is entirely possible to learn on your own. You will however progress faster in your playing if you play with a group. Even if all you guys do is horse around and don't really take it too seriously. The advantages of group play are 1) you will sound better playing a series of chords or notes with the appropriate accompaniment than say learning how to play Santeria solo. 2) you will learn to keep proper time in your playing, something I found difficult when learning.
Lessons will help you learn theory and technique, the latter being something more difficult to learn on ones own. They will teach you scales and about relative major and relative minor chord progressions.

What this means is that for any chord in the relative major category there is a corresponding relative minor chord to enhance, or give your song a different sound while not offending listeners.
Some resources for you.
http://www.songsterr.com/ Complete archive of a ton of songs, for almost every instrument arrangement in tableture. Very good site, worth the $9 a month membership due to you can slow a song down until you know the parts and also print out the music. The free version will still allow you to see all the notes, and have the background accompaniment but you can not print or slow a song down.
Google is your friend

Just about anything you wish to play you can find tabs for on Google.
Also I have found Youtube quite useful for learning new stuff.
Pick a song you want to learn and type the name of the song followed by the phrase on guitar
And you will more than likely find someone who has made a video breaking the song down into parts for you, by following along you can pick up the rhythm quite quickly.
Personal advice here take it how you will.
Practice daily at least a half hour to an hour a day. It will hurt your hand and fingers at first but after a month or so your hand will strengthen, your fingers will develop callouses after a week or two playing at that rate. You will find with daily practice you can play longer as well. I imagine now you start to hurt after about a half hour. Something else you can do is what I like to call "micro practice", most times I don't sit down and play straight. I'll go out to smoke and I'll take my guitar and play for 15 - 20 mins, I do this about 8 times a night. Also if I'm cooking dinner I'll pick it up and start playing, or when I'm doing a defrag I'll play a bit.
After a few months you will be able to play a few hours before you start to cramp. Go slow, no one runs or sounds like Hendrix when they pick up a guitar. You will likely not notice improvement in your playing but others will. Keep in mind you are hearing it daily and proficiency is slow.
Keep at it and have fun. It's truely a great instrument to learn.
By the way about a year ago I picked up a bass for the first time. Took me a month to learn to play it. So once you have guitar down, bass is gravy.
Last thing. Don't stick to easy stuff. People tend to do what I call "going for the standby" basically when they pick it up they go for the one song that is easiest for them to play. Don't do this, challenge yourself by performing technically challenging pieces. This doesn't mean pound out Johnnie B Goode your first run, but when you learn the chords to your first song, try playing it in another chord position, or just some chords in another position. Can be fun and limbers the fingers. _________________
