It may sound like I'm talking down to you, but I just want to make sure. Have you removed the hard drive from the laptop, hooked it up to another computer, and completely reformatted it?

If not, try that. That doesn't work, try using the ultimate boot cd to reformat, that doesn't work, find the maker of the drive and get a low level format tool from their site.

Check your mobo bios, try another AHCI setting if it has one, if it's enabled disable, if it's already disabled try with it enabled.

If this doesn't work, download a livecd disk and use the gparted that comes on the disk to do partitioning.

cfdisk usually has some auto-partition mode. Try making one ext4 partition for /home and another one about 20GB for /.
