AH, I know what I want to do now!!
I want to make math applications. I first want to make an application that can solve quadratic equations, using the formula:

I want to make a neat GUI that allows the user to put a value for "a", "b", and "c" to get two possible answers.
Although this may be difficult, I might just make something small like:
a + b = c
Then the user can fill in two variables and get an answer out of the third one.
Yes! This is perfect! And hopefully. if I get enough experience with this, I can create full calculators that allow a wide variety of calculations to be made.
All in Java too. I hope this works out for me. Do you know anything that I can use to get me started?

| yeah sure use antlr to generate a lexer/parser for your grammar then all that's left is the code generation

Lol'd. If I were you I'd just start with VB, as it's relatively easy to learn, and from there you can start learning a different language.

Start with C# , its as easy as VB , but you'll learn all C-based languages better(which is very useful) like C++ , C , PHP , Java, Javascript,...

I personally think it's more important to learn logic and general data structures that go into programming aswell as just the langauge.
Logic is the grammar of your programs and the language is the words (metaphorically speaking), so no matter how many words you know, you'll still be illiterate unless you can put them together coherently with grammar.

oh. If that's the case, then I guess I'll switch to that C#.

Would learning the logic and data structure be part of the process if I just begin learning a language from a tutorial in a book?

Maybe, it all depends on the book. I suggest getting a book that's aimed at college freshmen, those will most certainly have a healthy dose of both.
I enjoyed the book "Data Abstraction and Problem Solving with Java" (Carrano/Prichard), although it's not a beginner book, so precede it with a introductory book to Java.
