Cheat Engine

latest stable CE on win 7 x64 closes w/o any error when I try open .ct file using file open dialog.

But it works nice if I just doubleclick on.ct file.

Any ideas how to fix that?

Edit: More details.

It happens when I Run this program as Administrator.
It doesn't happen when I login as Administrator (switch user) and then execute it.

does it also happen if you try the 32-bit version of ce ?

also, does this happen on all ct's in all folders, or only those in your c:\users\ folder ? (more specifically, does it happen in folders without special characters )

Just found out that cheatengine-i386 doesn't crash, other 2 exes crashes.

I cant tell what dir it's crashing with because it happens so fast that I cant read what's written in file open dialog. I just see it flashing for moment.

ah ok, so just opening the dialog already causes a crash (so not even selecting a file)

I was just confused that just 1 exe is what works and other 2 doesnt. I have 64 bit OS, but 64 bit exe dont work, but 32 bit exe works. Don't get it.

Perhaps you have installed a explorer extension for 32-bit that isn't compatible with 64-bit

explorer extension? I dont have any explorer extensions. I have default explorer that comes with win 7 and I haven't touched it.

I guess u installed daemon tools pro
just disable shell extension/integration

Having the exact same issue with the ?new? Windows 8 update that rolled out last night.

Yesterday my CE worked fine, today got a "reboot for win8 update message" and now CE instantly closes when I click the "open cheat table" button OR select "open file" from the drop down menu.

Not sure what was in that Win8 update, but clearly it broke something.

Just did an impromptu "test" and discovered that the 32bit exe(cheatengine-i386) still works fine, its the 64 bit exe (cheatengine-x86_64) that causes the crash/close.

I also happen to have Alcohol120% installed with shell extensions (woks like Daemon Tools) so I'm going to uninstall that and see if it fixes the issue for now at least.

EDIT: So, just uninstalled A120% and rebooted and CE 64bit still closes, so no change. Guess I'll be using the 32bit version for a while..

EDIT2: Fixed my problem, heres how.
1. Uninstalled CE 6.3
2. Ran "Glary Utilities" registry cleaner (good tool, google it)
3. Downloaded the "NO SETUP" version of CE, extracted it a writable directory
4. No longer have the issue.. both 64bit and 32bit works fine.
