| It's conceptual. If it has a derogatory meaning associated with its semantics then it shouldn't be said. Just as 'gay' is a perfectly fine word until you use it as a derogatory term.

| The "more young people will read it" thing disgusts me. Did these fucking assholes even read the book? If they did, they would know that n word or, Huck Finn isn't a kids book. When I was 11, was I old enough to be mature about the N word being in the book and understanding why it was there and the context? Absolutely! But when I was 11, did I understand Huckleberry Finn? No! Would removing the N word have made that fact any different? No! This kind of thing REALLY makes me angry. IF YOU WANT TO DO THIS FUCKING BULLSHIT GO TO FUCKING CHINA, YOU COMMUNISTS! Think about it! If you go to China, you don't even have to change words! You can just ban the whole thing!

If you say:
"Oh I am stupid!"
Then ok.
If your friend says:
"You are stupid!"
Probably nothing wrong.
If a stranger says:
"You are stupid!"
Then you will be probably offended.
There is an inner circle where you tolerate it and there is an outer circle where you don't. If a white guy say it, it is different than if a black guy say it.

| I don't get why words can be offensive at all, if someone tells you "I'm going to f*** your mother" they obviously aren't serious, so why take any offense to it. They are just trolling and it will make them angry if you don't react.

afro american humans don't like to be afro american humans. They realize it sets them apart from the rest of america, and they don't like it. At least that's my assumption. Basically they don't like to be reminded about it and separated because they are afro american humans.
It's just part of our culture, now though. That it is offensive. Honestly, I've very rarely had anyone be offended by the word. But then again I don't have person with a high concentration of pigment in his skin friends so...

Let me preface this by letting you all know I'm an aspie so I'm having a tough time finding a way to portray this opinion.
In the United States, most minorities live in poorer areas, often called slums, hoods, or ghettos. Culture in the ghettos is offensive to most upstanding citizens.
I believe that typical american associates skin colors with the cultures most often represented by people of these colors (or skin color is associated with culture, something along these lines).
In american society, african-americans represent a lower tier of human because of this cultural correlation. Minorities notice this too, and are offended when associated with it.
I don't know, maybe someone who understands what I'm trying to say can clean this idea up.

It's not just something that's lost and forgotten after a few years. The word is associated with a period of time and a way of life that is part of American history. Regardless of how much people hate history and don't want to think about it, it happened and we live with it.
Think about it in a different perspective. Or rather you in their position in some manner of tragedy. Perhaps your parents are brutally murdered in front of you while you are hopeless and can't do anything. How would you feel if people kept calling you useless or some other word that kept forcing that back into your mind? (Not to say this really compares 1:1 but its the same idea.)

well that's exactly the point. when said to each other they don't mean it in a degrading way. it's context. words have no meaning without context

It's insulting(and with good reason) when used with the intention to insult.
The same goes for: Gay, fag, homo.
Somewhere out there, there's a bunch of "i'm gay and I feel the need to prove it!" faggots in denial who are offended when somebody says: "Oh man this gay..." on a typical, every day situation to just say: "this is stupid"
And somewhere out there there's a moronic, stereotypical black guy with no formal education being offended because some white guy said: "Niggah let's go!" To his best friend~
The problem is that some people don't know how to look at the different connotations and then single out the negative/insulting version of the word when in use.
