Occasionally when I click on a link on google, I get redirected to a random (and usually creepy) site. This is a malware infection, right?

I too had recieved it just yesterday. When I search and click for an image in google it redirects me to this site that says that your coumputer had been infected with a virus. It also force downloads an exe installer. Don't know whether It's gone but ill check again later.
Any other recommendations beside HijackThis?

Malwarebytes will find it.

Malwarebytes will find it. | That's hilarious, because neither malwarebytes or hjt worked.
I don't really know where to start in order to remove it manually, because the thing isn't exactly in your face about being malware, nor is it very consistent.

Use Avast. It's never let me down.

It sounds like you've got a rootkit.
Try using UBCD4Win, it should work.

Goto majorgeeks.com look for BHODemon. http://majorgeeks.com/BHODemon_d3550.html
It's a program that will scan your computer for Browser Helper Objects, and allow you to remove them. You may have this malware masquerading as a bho, in which case any av will ignore it as it looks legit.
If this is happening on Firefox solely and never under IE, I'd suggest uninstalling Firefox and running a registry cleaner then reinstalling FF should resolve the issue.
Back in 2009 there was a virus that ran under FF that caused something similar about 3 out of 4 google searches would redirect to malware sites.
