I have to agree with Saifallofjmr, I think it's driver related. Drop latest drivers and go with ones just prior to latest.

For SnG's try reversing your power rails to the card. Just swap em.
Is this problem still limited to gaming? Or are you seeing it all the time? You could also make sure that the fan on the GPU is spinning.
Are you over-clocking anything?

1st.
Most likely the graphics card crash`s because your spec`s are way to high for the game it just cant handle it, in other words it cant handle the pure awesomeness of your computer =).
2nd.
My other theory is that a .dll file is acting up with a image. But the program stills runs and the reason for this is because the computer accepts the programming. Then doesn't find any errors so it just doesn't go to the error pop up window, this could happen with more than 1 file. I have had this personally had this happen to me
1st. How to fix
buy a lower graphics card and install it.
2nd. How to fix
uninstall the game and then reinstall the game after that do a disk defragment restart your computer.

I understand what you're saying, but
1. I think source games like L4D1/2, Team Fortress, CS:S, aren't too low in specs.. I know I have a decent GFX card, but it's surely not that high up there.
2. It happens on multiple games, so I don't see how every file could be messed up, but I could try re-installing just l4d and see if it happens again

congrats man you have a dying geforce card, just like 9 million other people.
you can probably more than likely fix it by baking it. find the guide, do it, win.
