Companies are always looking for good programmers because most of them are idiots and few of them can do a decent job. While they may not have a place for another idiot, there is always a place for a talented guy who make quality products. If you will become a good programmer, you will have a job with a good salary easily. If just an average, you will starve to death. There is enough average programmer already but there are very few skilled guys.
This is a great post and true. If you are good enough you can get jobs that pay plenty in certain places. For example:
- Financial institutions (investment banks)
- Financial services (eg. Bloomberg)
- Tech companies (eg. Google, Microsoft, IBM, etc.)
- Consultancy firms (eg. Accenture, etc.)
- Professional services/accounting firms (eg. Big 4, etc.)
I have tonnes of programming friends going into these companies and they are starting out with an average of £30,000 with some going up to £40,000 and this is at a graduate level. You do need to be good but it's very doable and there is a lot of demand out there.
