i was thinking of getting a hamster soon. does anyone have experience with hamsters and knows which is a good one ? i want something i can play with a lot. also preferably not too expensive in case it dies fast..

also how high maintenance are they. if they're hard to keep i'll get a friend to buy one instead.. looked into dwarf hamster and panda bear hamster so far. gerbils are shit since apparently you need 2 or it'll die of loneliness. guinea pig is a maybe

I haven't owned a hamster, but on the criteria of playing, wouldn't a larger animal be preferred, such as a standard dog or cat? Even a ferret is funner. If it HAS to be a hamster, then cost wise they arent too bad. They eat lettuce and such, and you only need water for it to drink. The most expensive thing might be its housing. I'll look more into it and report later.

i had a dwarf hamster, they are nice and fun to play with (run about like fuck, DON'T LET THEM ON THE FLOOR IF YOU HAVE CUPBOARDS ETC WITH GAPS UNDERNEATH)

cat and dog is too much maintenance. also i'm living in a city and am on a placement on a full time job so wouldn't have time to walk it and stuff like that. i'm not big on cats either to be honest.

@bullfrog: are they friendly ? or hard to keep or anything ? dwarf hamster looks a little like a mouse though.. not so nice

I have a campbells dwarf.
He cost like 8 bucks or something, the maintenance was what was kinda expensive.

Playing with hamsters seems fun at first, and it seems like you'll wanna do it all the time, rite?
After a few months or so it just gets boring.
Hamsters aren't like dogs or other animals, where they have complex brains and you can have fun with them all the time.
If you touch them they won't give a fuck.
If you pick them up they'll get scared and call their auntie and uncle in bel air.

They're very low maintenance, just give them enough fucking water, and enough fucking food and you're done.
Sure, they would like some wood shaving bedding shit, but I once covered the floor of the cage in paper towels and Hamster was just fine.

Toys are needed but you can be a cheap nigger and use home made toys.
Cardboard tubes are pretty cool.
Old pipe segments also work.
Get a bowl, turn it upside down and cut a fucking door in it. Bam, instant hamster house igloo thing.

They don't get lonely (I think), and if they do, you can just pet them like twice and they're happy.

They need a fuckload of excersiez though, and for some reason they only ride on their wheels at night (when ever it's dark, not at a specific time).
And these wheels can get super fucking loud.
So you might get annoyed.
Just put some lubricant on it or something.

Get one that looks eggy.
Few months old, kinda small (srs bigger ones are worse overall), huge fucking eyes.
HIS EYES SHOULD LOOK INTO YOUR SOUL

Anyways they die in like 2 years or something so you won't get too attached to them. And they won't get too attached to you.
If you don't touch it for 2 weeks it goes untamed again, I've heard.
Also I suck at making posts and you should disregard all of this.

Hamsters are cheap as fuck.
They look like mice?
Get close to one and see how fucking cute he is.

They don't get lonely.
They're super cool like that.

Maintenance is low, jew yourself some shortcuts.
My hamster has an upside down bowl for a house, an old pipe segment for a toy, a small dish full of water for sustenance, and a cardboard tube as another toy.

Bedding comes in fuckhuge packages for somewhat cheap prices.
People say not to use pine or cedar or some shit because hamsters can't breath it.
Fuck them, hamsters breath what they wanna breath.

very friendly, don't bite, not hard to keep
just feed it as often as the petshop says (MUST)
if you buy two, they will get along but don't put them ontop of each other (major riot)
on the top of the cage, make sure the gaps between the bars are wide but not wide enough for it to squeeze through (my old hamster got stuck in the bars during the night and gnawed through its leg >.<)

I've read up real quick, apparently the largest cage is best. If you go dwarf hamster, you can't get a wire cage (read, can, but shouldn't). You clean the hamsters cage once or twice a week. Glass cages and tube cages are harder to clean, and start to reek much 'faster' than other options which have better ventilation. Generally, you wan't a wire frame top for the cage. You'll need bedding material, water source and food source, as well as some toys. Price for a decent cage is 50 to 150 USD hamster bottles range from 2 to 20 USD, with hamster bedding costing around 10 USD. All in all, about a 190 USD investment.

I'll see if theres any particular bedding you should choose, also a normal 8oz bottle should do, would probably last the thing a day or two on a single load. If you don't want to use a bottle, you can use a dish, but it has to be a hard material, such as metal or ceramic. Apparently the little rascals chew on anything plastic.
