It really bugs me that you completely dismiss software engineering while probably having no clue wtf you are doing. On a more relative note, NOT going deep now will only harm you. Buy a kit, follow directions, do what other people have already done. You won't be "making new computers" but you'll be getting a start for a university bach / masters program. Don't give up on something because it seems too hard.
Also, I feel like you're full of shit when you say SE is "too easy" and a joke. And until you "prove me otherwise", I will continue to think you're full of shit. I bet you couldn't even come up with an efficient program (efficient in the sense that it works with itself to solve the problem correctly) for the "easy" stuff i'm doing now at uni.

What! I'm just saying that 'Software Engineer' shouldn't even be a title of Engineering! Its just a group of programmers that wanna feel like they're engineers when all they do is manipulate the creation of true Engineers!!!
Programming is common sense!!! Engineering is imagination and creation!
Edit:At the above line... now I see how I contradict myself.. But bear with me O_O
I want to be an Engineer! Not a programmer!!! Engineers create the future, not programmers!!! Whats the point of making billions of applications on a 1995 Computer..??? When the Engineers can make super new high tech I/O devices like a mind control keyboard/mouse!!!
But.. I think I'm gonna learn Assembly/(everything I need to finish understanding computers... so you wont get pissed at me for rooting out SE!)
Then I will do real Engineering.!!!
Then robots!

Kiddo, kiddo, kiddo...
After the great engineer designs a badass robot, who writes the AI?*
* Don't answer it - it's rhetorical.

Most useful thing for you to read is computer architecture and operating system concepts. A very basic book for these is art of assembly. My personal favourites for computer architecture are:
Computer Organization and Design - Patterson and Hennessy
Computer Architecture, a quantatitive approach - Hennessy and Patterson
Tanenbaum's books are well reputed for Operating Systems.

Software Engineers don't just "program". They design solution systems that try and employ minimal cost. While you may not to pursue Software Engineering, you will still want to apply these concepts to any area of programming.
Thus, I recommend that you learn about these concepts before going into more complicated solution systems.

You wanna know how to build a bad ass robot. You will need to know how to design something from scratch. You will need to know how motors and gears work together to achieve a desired effect. You will need to know how to program a computer to translate this into the control for your motion. You will need to most likely build everything yourself.
Kits are excellent routes for this.

I'd like to get my hands on some of their stuff.
I want to build my own life size Dalek.
