In the game I'm thinking of, the background is literally black and players take it in turns to move across a board which has see-through squares and white lines. The characters are sprites - like gameboy characters but a bit more detailed and they level up separately. There are enemies on the board as well and you have to get to power-ups or a key or something for the next level. They don't actually fight fight.

A friend was describing it, we don't know the name of it.
