for programming: if you can not make a profit on developing software then that is a mayor flaw. That is one of the reasons there are no games for linux. since it is open source and most of the things are free there is no way to make a profit out of it so why bother on making something for it?. Also the amount of users... If you spend years developing something that hits all the linux market and make all the linux users have to buy it then it would not really be profitable since the amount of users is not really big.

Seriously, what do you not understand? Linux is open source, you can't make money off of it. Jeez, I'm starting to think you're like 5.

learn to read what is written for you jeez :/

".::Byte::.>> make no profit == not good for working. maybe good for enthusiast hobbyst programming. and I already said good thing about linux is stability I recognize that. "

therefor

"Linux is open source, you can't make money off of it." It is useless from my perspective.

I bet you're gonna be a Bill Gates when you grow up, a greedy fag that only wants money but in return gives out shit product. You don't even deserve to be called a programmer for being so ignorant. Programming isn't about making money. It's more about fun than making money. But obviously you have your head so far up your ass you can't see that.

Sorry for not being a kid and want to make a real life out of what I like doing.

I'm not starting a games development company to make games and have fun. I'm starting it because I like programing and the art behind games and could find a future on it.

Nvm... you don't get it.

Not going to read this craptastic thread about why Linux is good or not, for programming, it is the de facto. No one deploys a shit Windows stack or considers their Visual Studio a tool-chain. Anyways, I use ArchLinux period. Not quite bare-metal, but only has enough so that it installs, and getting necessary packages isn't a pain in the ass.

P.S.: The Windows kernel is orgasmic, it is an art piece. The Windows OS however, is not. I wish Windows went the ArchLinux way.

P.S.S.: Most of these are personal opinions, you may define good differently, and chances are, some know it all is going to come by, quote me, and tell me what is wrong with the Windows after using SoftICE to step through the kernel code, but you know what, you are awesome.

I just don't like the fact that people underestimate Linux and don't give it as much credit as they should. If Linux was Windows and Windows was Linux, we'd all be saying Windows sucked in the same way people do Linux.

I don't like when people try to defend something pointless.
Some people like linux, other people like windows.
Some people find Linux useless (( I do )) some others don't.

"If Linux was Windows and Windows was Linux, we'd all be saying Windows sucked in the same way people do Linux."

that is probably true but that is because since Windows pretty much started it, more people is in that boat. More and better software was developed for that platform for more years and since Windows got the mayority of users, there is where the market is at.

my perspective about how Windows is better than Linux is not about performance of the OS itself but the capacity of being really useful for work.
Work for me is game development which has included 3D design/animation/modeling, Textures creation/illustration, music development /SFX, video composition and programmnig.

I'll stop it here but yeah that is my position and it is really not going to change. For "me" Linux is useless

" Windows did not start it.

Mac OS took of in 86 I believe. Windows came out in 1987 lol."

That's not the point. and by "started it" I meant taking over the market.

I agree, everyone has opinions and preconceptions, but your points where just bonkers. I mean, not being able to make money off of Linux? How does that even? Sure, you can't redistribute their code and sell it, but if you make an original product for Linux, it will sell just like a Windows product. The only difference being is that no Linux user is stupid enough to buy something when theres a free alternative, unless of course theres some new radical feature in what you are selling that sets it miles apart from the freeware competition. I also wanted to point out, using Wine doesn't make a Windows program run slower, as it doesn't emulate the Windows OS in it entirety, simply provides libraries and basic services.

I'm not really familiar with Wine, but as far as I understand, It provides the windows libraries in order to be able to run windows applications. in other words, emulating windows.
about users well I think I made it clear. you just can't make a profit out of making linux applications. And yeah you can take the concept and translate the code to any platform you want in the end but then .. there is no point in not making it directly on your target platform. Since linux users are not a real profitable market, linux is not a valid target platform. ( at least I see it that way)

They can't just repackage the Window libraries, the Windows license doesn't allow it :\ They recode libraries from scratch, filling in the function logic while preserving parameters and return values types.

They aren't even close to reproducing all of the Windows libraries. Hence why most programs might not work, or work poorly\unexpectedly.

I am not familiar with the problem, but isn't Mono meant to deal with .NET on Linux?

Oral disease and the name of a .NET on Linux project I heard a while back. Never looked into it, so I am just working off of memory.

Mononucleosis is not an STD...

It's a viral infection.
