Recently, a classmate of mine accused me of cheating for my current mark in media arts (98%). In media arts the majority of classwork is done in photoshop elements, I saw this opportunity and decided to use my skill i gained before this class and a mixture of tutorial to secure my joe. Should this be considered cheating? Also I do this in a majority of my courses, for example I see essay sample for English to over come writers block and find tutorials to do well in computer tech. What is your opinion on the matter?

I have a digital media class too. And using a tutorial is not cheating in my opinion. Now if it says just use your imagination and you are using some one else's work then yes that is cheating. I'm the teachers assistant for my yearbook class and i help out people with photoshop and indesign me helping them isn't cheating is it? Unless he says its not ok then it seems fine to me.

No, almost everyone has used another person's work as an example for their own work at one point in their lives. Look at all of the books that have bibliographies, they have used someone else's work as a reference. If what you are doing is cheating, then so is everybody else.

thats not cheating but the oposite. It is completely right wanting to gain more knowledge and tutorials are a way to get new knowledge easily. you just weren't given this knowledge but you searched for it with is better.

Cheating is obtaining the answer to a question without understanding either.
Anything else is resourcefulness.

There's a big difference between 'what is due' and 'what is right'. Well, if there are rules to abide to, then he can consider it as cheating, but if there's none, then when is being smart and being talented considered cheating.

How is this different to reading a handout from a teacher about effective essay writing?
IMO it isn't different, and isn't cheating.

That is the equivalent of further reading in order to gain a better understanding. Which is intelligent, not cheating.

learn to cite and you will save yourself a lot of trouble.
if you used info from somewhere else then you need to cite your sources.

If you are going out of your way to use extracurricular resources in order to gain a better understanding of the material, then as a teacher, I think you're doing what ALL students SHOULD be doing...that is, not expecting to be spoon-fed every last drop of information. What you're doing is called "research" and the fact that you're culling information from your past experiences to help with current problems shows that you are an intelligent person.
Contrast that with the kid who thinks "I don't know what I'm doing, so I'll just look at Joe's work and copy what he's doing." That student isn't learning the skill the assignment is suppose to build in him; all he's learning to do is copy. Copying is not a necessary skill; photocopiers and ctrl-C have been invented to do those things so we wouldn't have to.
