|
|
So my mom stepped on my laptop as it was on the floor and she was just cruising through. I decided to ignore this because there wasn't much I could do.
This caused my laptop to flail around like an idiot, not really staying still (the lcd part).
Eventually it just snapped on both sides. Of course, I do what any sensible person would do and try to return it by warranty to the company. They do not cover hinges.
Thinking this was a small problem, I went to local computer shops to try to get an estimate for this sort of thing. I DID NOT go to best buy because I know geek squad overprices the shit out of things. Long story short, estimates were between $150-200 (!!!). When I found out this, I started to panic to shit because I knew that my parents and I did not have that much money to spare (I don't come from a poor family, just that they like to spend as little money as possible on things like electronics and clothes)
That is extremely pricey and I need alternatives.. Mind you that the LCD, keyboard, etc all work, just the metal hinges snapped and now I have to hold it up by putting something behind it.
Help me, please.
tl;dr: Read the fucking text. Learn to skim at least.. how did you get through school?!
EDIT: It's a shitty emachines D620 (I know I know, but they're partnered with gateway now)
I've googled the shit out of this, but the small fixes are rather ridiculous.
Oh, and if this is in the wrong subforum, please move it.

Eh, moving this to Comp Talk.
As a solution: Find a similar laptop model, or an old junk laptop and see if he hinges will work then and fix it yourself?

The reason why its so expensive is due to proprietary parts, the hinge that was broken is in fact part of the whole frame that holds up the LCD screen.
Once you have broken the hinges, the whole thing has to be replaced.
A laptop similar may not work as the frame may be slightly different, you will have to find the exact same model.
Another thing to look at is the body work, if these are damaged, you might need to replace them as well.
At $150 is acceptable up to $200 and it's too much, though it depends on the total value how much you bought that laptop?
As for your warranty, they don't cover it because it's physical damage.
You tried calling the manufacture and see how much you can get the spare parts. If its cheaper, you can replace it yourself.

Thanks, but I decided to save myself the heartache just decided to get a new laptop. Now I have another questions, what sort of legit websites buy spare parts? I was thinking of taking it apart and selling some of the parts like RAM, LCD, and DVDRW burner.
