You can purchase directly from their site. Though I would do a google search and see if there are any providers close to you, so you don't have to give up any bank or cc info.

Greendot only makes US purchases. Minecraft is not a US purchase.

Most banks have annual or even monthly fees for using the account.

eg: chase bank - $6 a month unless you use your debit card 6 times, or meet other conditions.

I also dislike bank accounts, but as we're getting more and more technology dependent, everything is switching.

Few years ago I went to pull $1000 out of my account for a down payment on my car, I was then bombarded with questions about what it's for. As if I couldn't have MY money that i gave them to hold for me.
