Server 2008 for shear fun factor. Nothing like trapping DEP dependent processes.

Mac OS X for UI.
Ubuntu (never tried any other distro) for performance.
Win7 for general browsing/gaming/etc.

I love linux and I would have to agree with Noko_112, when you are trying to install a package that isn't part of a package maintainer it can be a pain in the ass having to manually install 7 packages to get 1 that you want to work.

Some drivers are not placed into a repository. They simply release the source and let you do your own
./configure
make
make install

or for the brave

./configure && make && make install

Some developers though, will base some part of their project on an obscure library that you will find has a broken dependency on your system. In which case you end up getting that lib to compile your app, find out that obscure lib relies on another lib, get that and then finally after 3 flaming hoops and jumping the shark you get your app installed.

But yes if at all possible you should use some types package maintainer.

I install any Ubuntu version on my PC and everything works perfectly. When I install windows, I have to rip my house apart looking for the disk with my ethernet card's driver on it so I can get onto the internet and download sound and video drivers. Windows is kind of "duchebag" when i comes to drivers/software (No, im not a noob)

honestly it depends on what im doing. If im doing research ubuntu 10.04 (linux) gaming xp or 7. But honestly vista has more problems than any other operating systems (including earlier windows) windows ME is the worst of all but mac's layout just plain stinks and lacks the ability to give the user more freedom of origanality.

Thus far, windows xp. If I could move to 7, I would. I like 7 also but XP has done me well over the years.

ITT: People who don't realize that after the tumultuous release of Vista, Microsoft fixed everything that was wrong with it, but people still pretend it's bad.

I still like my Win7, though.
