And you can load skins a lot easier.
Just open minecraft.jar with WinRar and drop the terrain.png in it.
I have 3 minecraft.jar files which I switch between with batchfiles, so I can easily play any version I want.

I'd like an HD texture pack that works. I've tried the one above, followed lots of different instructions, but none of them work, I always get a black screen after the Mojang splash.

Getting it back to normal is pretty easy... just delete the "version" file and start up the client. Redownloads everything.
