Cheat Engine

and thought 'oh, well I'll just jump in quickly and see what it's like'.
After 10+ minutes of preparing to actually play the game, I got in, and decided to build something. I couldn't figure this out. I opened up the military, and tried to add one person. There was a tonne of gear to choose from.
I swear, my brain has never been screwed and overwhelmed so many times in such little time. Screw dwarf fortress.

Go watch youtube tutorials or go do adventurer mode.

You should watch some Let's play of adventurer mode to get a general idea of the gameplay first.

Go to a city to get a quests. If you're lucky you wont get a 7 headed hydra or a dragon the first time you play. You get quests from warlords in taverns. (Red "U"s)

Edit: The DF I linked uses a graphical tileset instead of strictly ASCII. Much better IMHO.
