That was one hell of a cave, and there's still lots more to it. I might build an underwater glass tunnel all the way over to the entrance.

Don't overmine on coal. It gets worthless fast.
Once you've got about 3 stacks you're good for a year.

You can get 8 full stacks of anything with one stack of coal. You'll have plenty.
Also: you can create obsidian yourself. It's a myth that it can only be premade.

One bucket per block.
But I think I can make an infinite source.

I don't get why obsidian is supposed to be indestructable(nearly). Obsidian is merely volcanic glass and diamond is harder.

Gold is also harder than wood.

You haven't been able to for a long while.

You can't make an infinite source of obsidian. Lava isn't like water and lava coming from a source block meeting with water makes stone.

I believe all that matters is how the water hits the lava, so a bit of macro'ing might make me able to load onto a dead spring with full capacity.

No.
One spring of lava + one spring of water = 1 block obsidian.
You can make an infinite spring of water, but not lava.
When you take out a spring of lava (bucketfull) the lava does not replenish, you can tell as it has flow.
Spring blocks do not flow.
So if you want to go down, mine out a huge lava area and bring it up with thousands of buckets go ahead.

Notice how he uses one bucket of water?
And seeing how water moves faster than lava, I'm thinking about tricking the client into giving me a lava bucket AND an obsidian.
