| How do you guys usually dig for ore? Do you just dig straight down, in a spiral, randomly, make giant caves?

| I dig stairs down, and when I hit bedrock mine across until I hit a cave. Mining any decent ores I pass on the way.

Don't dig down :/ You're bound to crash yourself by falling into the big bad blue.
Just look around for a cave, walk in and dig whatever you see of ores.
Should be more than enough.
