I'm looking for a "good" external hard drive but I don't know what to get. Can any of you recommend one?
Features that I'm looking for:
backup, high capacity, portable, password protection, file compression, fast in terms of speed.
It can have any or none at all but it must be "good"

I just got a 2TB Western Digital MyBook Essentials.
Quick, large capacity, password protectable... halfway portable, needs a power outlet.
Was only $139USD at Walmart.
Or you could always buy an external shell and an internal drive, then combine the two to save a few bucks.

Just open up the shell and stick in the internal hard drive or is there some wiring to do?

I would also love to know how.
I don't like the desktops, they're huge. I like the essential SE but it's only 1 TB but I think that's enough. It's pretty pricey, 200$ USD and the micro usb is said to be very sensitive so I'm afraid it'll break easily and disconnect and have slow transfer rate later on in life.

No, not open the hard drive, I'm talking about opening the shell then placing the internal in there.
@SF, was it hard to place the internal hard drive in there? What is there to do?

All external hard drive are nothing more than a regular internal hard drive with a hard shell around it.
You can buy yourself a internal hard drive and a external case and make your own external HDD.
Those pre-assembled external hdd's don't have special connectors between the hdd and casing itself, they'll all the same---SATA.

Really you're best bet is to get you're own enclosure because then you can upgrade it over time (usb 2.0-> esata-> usb 3.0 -> so forth).
Also it is usually cheaper.

How would you even upgrade O.o
If it's against the rule to post links to online stores, then can anyone pm me the stuff I'm looking for?

It's not against the rule to post links to online stores, where'd you heard that from? But it's illegal to post warez things.
Anyways, I would also like a link to a good internal harddrive 500gigs+ and a external shell for it from Newegg, of course.
