Could I take a hdd out of my current system and pop it into a different system (with windows 7 mind you) and the OS will actually work or will I have to do a repair option or a install over in total.
Yes the same gpu will be used.
Going from a 939 socket dual core to a AM3 socket quad core.

Yes you can take your HDD out of your current system and put it into another system(another motherboard). It's best to reformat on a fresh system setup though.

Not all always, and it all depends on the chipset but that may not be successful all the time.
Old computer: chipset A to new computer: chipset A = yes
but sometimes it may not work.
Old computer: chipset A to new computer: chipset B = No

What are you talking about? If he has a SATA HDD and the new system is compatible with SATA ofc. he'll be able to hook it up ~_~.

He means have all the stuff on the drive work too.
There will most likely be some driver issues and as kls pointed out, chipset conflicts.

I'll try it, if not I'll install over my current installation.
I'll post back if it works or not.

Yea most times the OS will reject the new mobo and other hardware and BSOD. You can however still boot safe mode in most cases. So if this is being done due to a bad board that just up and died, you can save your stuff.

I switched from some really shitty system only reusing my HDD. It actually worked really well, but my brother said I couldn't get all the power from my system before I reformatted.

I didn't have to do anything, just had to pop in my hdd, start up and let it install everything, wait till it's done/says some drivers not installed. Reboot and then everything works fine.
