I originally had the Zune software which was great but now for some reason it freezes and it is because of an issue microsoft hasn't solved and doesn't seem to plan on solving. I've used WMC for a while but it's just so bent on graphic display that my laptop cant use it incredibly smoothly.

So now for the real question, what are some good/free media players/organizers that I could use instead of these more popular ones?

Foobar2000 for purely music. There's a lot of visual themes for it on DeviantArt since the default style is really spartan. A huge selection of plugins too, even a Milkdrop plugin (for amazing visualizations).

For videos, I simply use Windows Media Player, although MPC:HC is easily superior to it in many aspects.

VLC is excellent. Small and doesn't hog an assload of resources.

I use VLC for both videos and music. You can import folders and you can select individual tracks as well and add them to a playlist. Heck you can even save playlists.
