|
|
I was just curious if push ups were the reason for my larger neck. I've been doing 20 push ups a night for the past year now. I can't tell if I'm getting fatter, building muscle, or just naturally widening around that area.
Any help would be great, thanks.

| I'd guess it builds muscle in your upper shoulder which is near your neck.

I used to keep doing pushups to the point of being able to do 100. I really kind of quit on doing them everyday because it creates a muscle imbalance and then your back gets weaker. Just don't overdo it.

How would you compensate, like with what exercises.

| Push ups don't build your neck muscles, they help you build your chest muscles (pectoral muscles), depending on whether or not you're doing them correctly.

20 is nothing, crank it up a little. you will be surprised how fast the numbers climb. if you're in relatively decent shape, 50+ consecutive is pretty possible within a few weeks.
i'm not so sure you'll be getting the roid neck you're after though

Do at least 40 push-ups
and do it more frequently, but yes, your neck will get bigger since blood rushes around your body trying to give oxygen to your muscles.

Okay I'll show you a back sit up.
1) Lye on floor stomach first
2) Try to lift your head+chest as high as you can
Try to hold if for as 5minutes and if you can do it longer add weight.

doing push ups every day is horrible. you need to give your body rest. since you've been doing push ups for a year now, you should not be seeing any results.
anyways, no push ups will not make your neck larger, it's probably because you are growing. push ups work out triceps, chest, and shoulders; not your neck.

| Push ups does not make your neck bigger, but helps out your triceps.

That isn't a back sit up, a normal sit up is going up to your knees, you don't hold it for 5 minutes.

| Besides, you will be toning your muscles with pushups, not growing em.

| It would probably make it bigger, but not that much of a major difference.
