Yes you should, start making a spiral staircase... your goal is to always explore caves like that.

My mines are huge. They're right under my house, too. I dig a lane about 100 blocks long, and then i make rows extending from the lane until I search as much as i can, then i make a spiral staircase to a level lower and repeat. I also label my mines. Right now i think I'm on mine 2b :\
Just recently flooded the end of one of my mines, so i just contained the water and made it a well. I can literally take sources of water from my well in the safety of my own home
