It is.
You put a 1kg weight along with your mother on a set of scales and it tells you the weight is 401kg, using algebra I can deduce your mother weight.
x + 1 = 401
x = 400

a/2 + b/2 = c
(a/2 - c)*-2 = b
Useful for knowing what you want to get for your next exam. A is your current average, c is your aim score. B will be the grade you have to get for this exam.
This is why math is useful, to calculate your grades for other subjects.
