Can imagine it being far more important in college or university, as they are at the age where they can be scouted for the big league. Would be nice for a school to say they had a sports celebrity graduate from there. |

I just realized how incredibly fucked up it is that countries such as the USA put such a high value on 'jocks', on an academic level. I've heard stories of how athletes pass their high school and college education by doing nothing but sports, and getting a free pass for whatever classes they took on the side.
I myself live in the Netherlands, and we DO NOT give free passes to people who are good at sports. In fact, 'sports' are not even a fucking academic accomplishment here. Do you know why? Because they aren't. Physical accomplishments have nothing to do with intellectual feets. But apparantly, schools value the money that comes with sports so much, they'll gladly 'assist' (with this I mean cheat) their athletes through whatever educational path they wish to pretend to have followed. This leads to burned up 30 year old athletes who are too fucking stupid to wipe their own ass, but are able to pretend like they've made an academic accomplishment.
tl;dr: Why do countries such as the USA treat athletes as if they are accomplishing something on an academic level? Shit is fucking ridiculous.

Agreed, in my classes, I have seen athletes get away with cheating on tests and even telling the teacher to shut up and talking back to him, as well as generally disrupting class and being so thick that it pulls us behind schedule, but the teacher doesn't kick them out, because then they wouldn't be able to play in a sport. It's ridiculous. |
We got roided up retards, and they've tried to kill me(and quite a few other people) and all they got was a 1 day suspension. Not to mention one of them near choked to death one of the coaches

In reply to OP, USA has such a high focus because, like most things American, sports are so big. The UK employs a system of merit during an academy style process, finding the talent in local areas and scouting them to the academies themselves at places other than schools, rather than only using the school system, which is what the US does.
Doesn't really matter, to be honest. Athletes make a ton of money for doing something they love, wish I could do that. |

I can honestly say I never cared for being a jock, because it's not that big a deal here. Mostly because sports isn't really a way to make it big here in the Netherlands, unless you're good at soccer (which can make you millions, per goal).
Also, I wasn't commenting on the fact that they are making money using sports, I was commenting on the fact that they are rewarded the same piece of paper as the people who put a lot of effort in their studies, only because they are good at sports. It makes the accomplishment for people who put in a lot of effort seem less valuable. It's a crooked system, and I'm glad we are not a part of it. |

Haha, epic you know that. I fail to see why those people would think physical and intellectual gain are the same. The physical attributes nothing to the intellectual, while the intellectual attributes greatly to the physical. Not to mention that the physical is fleeting, while the intellectual part is everlasting. Especially now in the digital era. Yet they gladly fraud an athlete through such a path, just so he can run around on a field to entertain people. Doesn't this mean that, by those standards, someone who wants to become a clown should receive the same treatment (I hope not, since I hate clowns, but you get the point). If only those institutes would realize how they are mistreating the students who actually put in the proper type of effort. |

To be fair to your point, a lot of athletes these days put the same kind of effort into their bodies and physical performance as intellectuals do to, for example, their research. The athletes, however, get to spend their free time doing whatever they want since they're so extravagantly paid. Additionally, it's been shown throughout the history of mankind that sports are just what people enjoy. The Romans used to indulge in Gladiators, the Greeks in the first Olympic games. Pitting man against each other is something I put down to human nature. It's only in recent years (1960 and onwards) where athletes have been paid for their efforts, because a economics has changed so drastically in that time. Before the 70s, athletes worked for a good wage, but not to such an extreme that players do now.
Furthermore, most athletics associations see themselves as businesses, with entrepreneurs at the top of the heirarchy running the show. Which is also a reason players of Football, Rugby, American Football and what have you are paid so well, because they can be. |

Agreed, in full. I understand how they are directing the effort into a different path. If I were able to make millions with doing what I loved to do, and it turned out to be a physical activity, I'd definitely seize such an opportunity. Just like singers, tv-hosts/actors, and whatnot, it's their right to use their talents in such a way. But by giving an athlete who did less or little the same "prize" as someone who studied hard, will just sully all of his or her efforts. I'm not disputing their effort, I'm not disputing the amount of money they make, I'm merely disputing that they do not deserve a diploma or title when they accomplish something in the field of sports. That is reserved for someone who directed their effort to studies, not sports. |
