Well getting it should unlock SourceSDK and SourceSDK base.
That lets you play with a bunch of a official tools. One of them being hammer the map editor.
You can also download Map Packs and mods. After you finish portal I highly recommend portal prelude. http://www.portalprelude.com/
It is challenging with a good storyline.
But you might need to buy a source game to unlock the source sdk.
