It's not men who act more straight, it's homophobes.
Most Homophobes are closet homos who are in serious denial and suffer from something called Reaction Formation. In order to not accept the truth, they act the opposite way. In a homophobe's case, they bash on gay people because they(the homophobes) are in denial and are too insecure of their sexuality so they try to be straight by acting against the homos.
It's the same shit as the little kid who pushes a little girl in front of his friends because he doesn't want his friends to know that he likes her.

TL;DR: Homophobes push gays away because they think it reassures their false sense of straightness.
CEF case of said people: Irwin(x0r) or whatever his name was.

It's from personal and first hand observations actually.
But if I took into consideration what you said, then I might as well not trust what science books say. Psychologists are scientists of behavior. Their research and contributions to knowledge is equally as valid and important as those of any other form of science.
