My dell Inspiron case fan recently started to make a kind of buzzing sound and it is very loud.

I opened my case, used an air canster, cleaned it and checked if anything was hitting against it

It sometimes turns off for a few seconds and than you can hear no noise but then it starts again

I think I should buy a new fan

can anyone recommend me one ?

This depends on your case. Figure out your case size/sizes and then you will know. Some cases can take 2 sizes.

It's also possible that it could just need some grease/oil in it. How long have you had it? This happened to my PSU fan so my only choice was to repair it instead of spending 50 bucks on a new PSU. it's rather simple and easy, but a new fan entirely would probably be better in terms of cost:time ratio.

He could probably use some WD40 if thats the case.

WD40 isn't meant to be used as a long term lubricant. It's meant to be short term. Some ballbearing grease from an autoparts store works wonder and only cost me around 3USD for enough to grease.. 500 fans? or more?

WD40 is not a lubricant, it is a water displacer. Never use it on your bike.

2 years.. the fan is complete and total shit if it died already. Mine took ~5 years of being up 98% of the time and that was only one of it's three fans.

get some oil and drip it into the hole you find when you peel back the sticker in the middle of the fan

You can't just go out and get yourself a regular case fan as the fan connector on a Dell case is almost proprietary (looks like a 3-pin audio connector). Even if you do managed to connect to a regular fan connector on the board, the stupid Dell bios will nag you to death about "CPU fan not detected or voltage too low" error

Had to change a few fans on a Dell desktops once and it was a PITA as you will need to get the same exact one all the way down to the tiny specs.

e.g. original fan uses 12v @ 0.85a and you got a 12v @ 0.79a.
Bios will give you a error.

So the error will not let me start my computer?

Do I even need that fan in there?
Will the computer be fine without it?

Tried the oil method but still same problem
