|
|
My computer freezes randomly at times when doing even the smallest things like using mozilla firefox (facebook, etc) and playing music on Windows Media Player
Like Mozilla Firefox will stop responding for about 10-20 seconds and it gets really annoying and sometimes even WMP will close down
I've noticed that my fans get really loud when this happens the computer literally starts to make the loudest noise from the fans
Is it overheating?
Its about 1 and a half years old
Windows 7
Quad Core Q6600
3GB Ram
I do tend to keep everything clean like unnecessary start up items, defragment every now and then etc. _________________

sounds more like a process or kernel routine is eating up all resources until it's done (slows down/freezes computer, and uses full cpu so heats up so cpu fan has to go faster)
Try getting the latest drivers, latest updates for programs you are running (anti virus/firewall, etc...) do a windows update, and have the taskmanager and resource monitor open at all times and see if you can catch what's causing it
I had exactly the same problem on windows XP a while back, but after a reformat it was gone _________________

Most likely a virus. Get malwarebytes or one of the many other AV programs and scan for one. Your fan is getting loud because it's kicking up the speed to keep the cpu cool under its pressure. |

@darkbyte I have everything up to date, I'll try to experiment with task manager and see what is causing the problem
but I was also thinking of a reformat as you suggested
@Hero Shouldnt be a virus, and my Kaspersky 2010 Internet Security detected nothing
Would cleaning the inside with a air canster work? _________________

What are ALL of your computer specs? It COULD be, but is most likely not a compatibility issue. It could also be a windows issue, such as:
WMP finds the music, tries to play it, then all the sudden it goes "OMFGWTWEFDEJWVCIRWFVRWVRWVNURWFFRWGRGRG" because it's like, CONFUSED OMG
Facebook might be all "U SEND PAKITS I SEND PAKITS" and then its all "OMFG NO WANT LOL GTFO WE STUCK LOL OMG"
What I mean is, a difficulty transferring data, or even a "data jam".
Do you get any error messages before, during, or after the freeze (like when you reboot on XP after a crash, it's all "WINDOWS HAZ RECUVERED FROM A SRS ERROR"). |

This seems like a whole bunch of speculation, but it sounds about right for a Windows machine.
If it is some hardware compatibility thing, though, we probably wouldn't be able to come to that conclusion with the specs. My impression was that some update went wrong for a system file or files. Then again, I guess it could be hardware-related. Most simple way to check this is by putting some live OS (Linux) on a USB drive you have lying around and booting from it. Do the same sort of things that are troublesome under 7. |

Is there a way to determine the problem without using a live OS Linux ?
Should I just reformat? _________________

If you have nothing to lose just reformat. Otherwise, you have something causing the issue. Did you change any drivers for anything lately? My netbook became fucked up when I tried to change my drivers for the speakers. I thought it would help make the static sound go away. It made everything super lag for some reason. Reinstalled the old and its good as new.
Try some things first though. Registry cleaning, chkdsk /r (in cmd), defrag the HDD. Also try sfc /scannow (in cmd).
These all can help or show problems. |

Should I just reformat? | There is, but the live linux OS would determine if it is a hardware or windows problem rather than us having to search for alternatives. |
