yeah and the ATI card is an absolute shitload faster.
and it's pretty unlikely nvidia is going to be able to directly compete very well in pricing considering their die is monstrous in comparison.

i'd be surprised if they could even get a product out that could top the 5970 since their die is so power hungry. if your card draws more than 300w, it's considered out of spec and support for it will plummet.

yeah the 5970 is almost double as faster than the nvidia GTX 295

thats why its more expensive. :/ Hero always speak of ATI being cheap and better because once even he compared with a nVidia Quadro :/
ATI doesn't make professional cards, only for common users.

__ about power consuming, a good PSU will do it. I prepared my new PC for the GF100 when it releases. got a 650W PSU (( should be enough ))

300w is the limit for manufacturers, past that and you lose support since you're out of the pci-e spec range.

a card cannot exceed 300w if it wants to be sold.


and yes, ati does make workstation cards.

I have searched for them with no results.... any specific name for the cards?

.__. I just found it going through the amd website, I think I was blind last time I checked. k k ATI FirePro, I'm checking it.


well not really something to compare... the nVidia quadro of 4GB with 240 cores is like 3000$ and the best ATI FirePro of 1GB (( which is the best one )) is 900~950$


after some research: looks like AMD simply dont care much for the professional cards and stays more with the commercial ones. Nvidia is the opposite and currently there is a huge gap between they both nVidia is currently much more advanced in technology for this GPU accelerators.

when you buy the professional cards, you're really not getting much of a hardware advantage. maybe a bigger framebuffer and some other minor tweaks, if even that.

the biggest difference is that you get a different driver set which is solely optimized for those kinds of applications. you're not paying a premium because the hardware is fucking awesome.



i'd say ATI is in a much better position for gaming, as their die is efficient as shit compared to nvidia. nvidia's yields are still bad and their costs are probably astronomical compared to ati.

nvidia went the brute force way as usual, while ati is clearly developing with efficiency in mind.
