Never said I wanted to do it the easy way. I'd much rather do it the hard way and learn from it, then just go do what everyone else does and buy a new drive.

This isn't really very useful knowledge. If anything it would probably cost more to fix than it would a new drive, that is assuming you can actually find what you need which is probably unlikely.

Just buy a new drive, despite this not being the answer you were looking for

Also I recently took apart a dvd burner and yeah you can't replace the diode you need to replace the drive in total.

I tried to pull the diode out of a CD drive and it was a pain in the ass.
It's supposed to be easier with a DVD drive, although I havent tried.
