You guys talk and bash religion quite often.
If it's possible, find this book and read it:
http://www.amazon.com/Why-God-Wont-Go-Away/dp/0345440331
It traces religions to it's origins and why humans are inclined to follow them. It also address a very detailed and scientific view on god. The book is not asking you to believe. It takes an evolutionary and psychological approach to understanding the being most of us call God.
In all seriousness, you should read it.

Alright, I argue religions purpose is to explain the afterlife, but then evolved into a means of control.

Without an authoritative figure, you would have complete chaos. People living a couple hundred years ago needed religion just as we need our government.

Autonomy. Every person makes his own decisions every day. Chaos is not a bad state, read about entropy.

lol'ed.
Society isn't perfect. Take away power and you have what's going on in the Middle East. Bring down every government and trust me when I say that every social construct will crumble in a matter of days. By nature, humans are social. We need an "alpha" figure in charge. Out of self interest, we would kill ourselves faster than we already are. We will do so for personal gain and we will do so to prove that we have the biggest dick in the pack.
You don't give complete freedom to a society and then expect it to function. You don't place your trust on the decisions of others unless there's a collective attempt to create restraints to protect your own and other's beliefs/wants. We need governments. Guess what, Religion is a primitive government, but a government nonetheless.

You are using your morals as an argument. Chaos is another state of humanity. It is neither good nor bad in definition. It is pure if anything. It shows the raw essence of what we are. You do not advocate absolute through any means by pretending it is for the better of anyone. You do not pretend that the best way to make a decision is by passing the control to one person.

Ok, how about i reword chaos to there being no order?
Take the guns and cell keys from the police officers in a jail and then tell me what happens.
Take away the laws and watch the crime rates shoot up to extremes by the next day. Wait a little bit more and watch your city burn to the floor.

Watch your assumptions sore to the roof in less than three seconds. Humans will naturally form a cohesive social structure. Even when the current one is taken away. It will simply be based on a more primitive basis, such as the strongest or smartest and some purely on mutual interests with no clear role or leader beyond survival. Humanity can never and will never know pure anarchy. The governments and religions you advocate demand full control under any means, and then place all the power in a select few individuals with interests that are not the common good.

@Bold:
-If we were few in numbers, then this might work. However, it wont. There's too many of us, there's too much conflict as it is, and the idea of an individualistic society such as the North American's would conflict with the idea of people bonding together to form social constructs amongst themselves.
@Green:
-That's called a government. Dictatorship, Tyranny, etc.
@red:
-Like you just said, we would form our own social constructs. Problem with this is the lack of control amongst every group. You wouldn't have complete disorder, but you would have something strong enough to kill us off. There would be too much conflict if you had too many groups of people trying to defend their crap. Unless we ignored each other, i would say that small bands of people setting up rules amongsts themselves would happen and they might function correctly(native american type of lifestyle.) However, given our population, this is an impossibility.
@Blue:
-The type of control isn't that extreme. I'm not placing power on a single person, i'm placing power on a group of people that create a single entity known as a government. Don't want to sound like a communist, but what i'm talking about is something that addresses the needs of the overall population.

First: Numbers has nothing to do with it. Nature would kill our excess off, with our help of course. Also, and previous notions would be case off due to the immediate override by the primitive instinct of survival.
Second: No government I know has no clear leader, and simply uses survival as their mandate. Government is about control. Its about pretending you help the people, while just giving them enough to placate them.
Third: Small bands form of like minded people. Obviously they would have conflicting ideals, until either one assimilated all others, killed all others off, or the remaining bands created a mutually beneficial co-existence. Which might look like our current government with time. Government after all is simply a step in social evolution.
