I just bought a genuine copy of win7 ultimate. My question is should I install 32 or 64-bit?

My primary concern is driver issues, as I know 32-bit drivers are not compatible with 64-bit. Also, are there any good methods that allows me to simply backup whole programs and directly migrate into a 64-bit environment?

I have 4GB of DDR3 (plus 512MB from graphics card, ATI Mobility HD 4330)

Check the laptop manufacturer's website for 64-bit Vista drivers for it's model. Assuming there are drivers, unless you actually use old 16-bit programs then there's no reason not to use 64-bit.

Any hardware made less than 3-4 years ago likely has a 64-bit version of its driver. It is extremely doubtful that you would have a problem with that. Also, if you don't use 64-bit, you'll have 512MB of RAM that you won't be able to utilize.

Install 64-bit.

That all depends on what you do. Some things don't work in 64bit. Yes, 64bit is better, but if you use alot of things that run in 32bit only, thats the way to go.

Okay, so installing 64-bit is my choice.

Another question: do I really have to backup everything? I heard that when you install a new Windows OS, it will put the stuff from the previous OS into a folder. (windows.old)

Edit: I also want to retain my softwares from the old OS, such as fingerprint sign in, etc... Any possible solutions?

Can you pick to install it 32 or 64? Razz that's pretty awesome. And if your hardware supports 64 there's no reason whatsoever not to run it.

If you throw in the disc while Windows is running, then it will backup the previous OS into the Windows.old folder that you mentioned. But everything else will be stay there, however I can't guarantee everything will work 100% correctly.

I've never tried installing while Windows was running, but to me it seems like it would be a little bit...messy. I had a new computer with a new HDD, so I didn't have to make that choice, but I would have reformatted. If there really are things you want to keep, back them up on discs/external HDD/flash drives.

The retail copies allows you to choose.

Screw it, I'm installing 32-bit for now, until I have time to backup 150GB of stuff.

You don't have to backup anything...

Almost all 32-bit programs run on 64-bit. Like literally, 99%

I know about the 32-bit emulation. I just find it annoying to reinstall all my programs and games.

Speaking of which, can I simply copy the registry I have now and implement it into the 64-bit registry? Would very much save me the hassle...
