Japanese is a really hard language to learn, I am in 10th grade and I'm taking it this year, you will get RAPED in Japanese class if you don't have a large amount of dedication and if you have older Japanese students in your class expect to get a lot of shit about your grammar/writing style. There are different ways to wright each Japanese character and you have to learn to do them right or you have to go back and relearn all the characters along with the correct stroke orders. Also, you have to be able to talk to 1 person in front of you and possibly point to certain things like in my school, (y'know, a skit). You also have to have a lot of free time and will study every night, because if your teacher is as big as a hardass as mine, he will throw 150 point exams at you randomly 1ce a month. (Beware: Schools/teachers are not agenst you, language learning takes a lot of practice so don't call yourself a failure (too fast)...

Edit: There is also like 3 different alphabets Kanji, Romanji, and! Hirigana! You will most likley learn Hirigana because it is the most basic, Romanji is the Englishlike translation and Kanji is a 50,000 alphabet (much too learn within a span of even 20 years)

Honestly, if you think Japanese is hard to learn your either fucking retarded or have Fetal Alcohol syndrome of some sort... I don't speak it that well.. but I picked it up in like a week its not the language its the person speaking it.... Anyways

in our colleges in england they seperate the year groups, so people in your class will be from your year and i dont think i would get raped by them as they would be on the same level as me

Don't listen to this person, he hasn't even learned English completely, and his advice about Japanese is wrong. It isn't hard at all. Japanese is actually one of the easiest languages to learn (grammatically) once you learn the two writing styles (Hiragana/Katakana). Romaji is just writing the words out in English symbols.

Romaji:
Watashi no namae ha yatsumo desu.

Hiragana:
わたし の なまえ は やつも です。

Katakana is only used in certain situations, mainly spelling out words from a foreign language. If you wanted to say hotdog, you would spell it in Katakana instead of Hiragana. The below sentence is the same as the above but written in Katakana instead (it shouldn't be however, this is just to show the difference in symbols).

ワタシ ノ ナマエ ハ ヤツモ デス。

And then of course there's Kanji which has had over 50,000 different symbols (most of them aren't used often though).

My school doesn't offer Asian languages because they're supporting communism, so says my teacher.

It can be hard if you cant stay with it. I have tried 4 times and i get bored after a couple of days. I just can't find the will to keep going. And then I start forgetting stuff. When english is your only language, it can be harder.

But I know people who learned solely by watching anime.
