| If it's custom build, does it have a brand name or any sort like Dell, Sony, HP, etc?

If it is custom built, it won't have a brand name.

Does this system come with any sort of software disc?
If yes, do you have the motherboard CD?
Provide the name of the motherboard/series that's on your disc.

That's alright, now before you continue on, let's see if this is the error you got.
When you insert the XP disc to do a install/repair during the initial setup, XP says cannot detect HDD... press F3 to quit.
Is that the error?
And since you don't know if you have the XP disc then the only thing you can do is
1. Go into bios and make sure your HD is actually detected properly like size of your drive.
2. In the bios, there should be a category something similar to SATA, IDE, or RAID configuration and this option right how should either be set at ACHI or RAID. If that is the case then set it back to IDE, Native, or Normal mode.
Note: You will need to look around for it.
3. Exit and Save changes
4. Insert XP disc and try again.

Since you can't provide the model for your board, there is no way to tell you exactly where that is.
Just look around for it and if you think you accidentally changed a setting just go to exit and discard changes and try again.

Just took a look at the manual and it's not in detail.
The category your looking at should be in the very first 4 categories on the left side of the bios.
Starting with Standard Cmos Setup down to Integrated Peripherals.

Of course you can't boot into windows as that method does not just magically make your windows work.
This time when you insert your XP disc, your HD should be detected.
