Hi, i was wondering what the legality of modding games is. say if i wanted to make a modded game of starcraft and give it away free if someone buys another product is that legal? or can you offer a free dowload of the modded game on your website? thanks!

It depends on the game.
Some don't allow it, others have special rules regarding mods(e.g whatever you make belongs to them so can't sell it, but publishing it on the internet is allowed), and others just allow it completely.

best to check the license agreement with the game

Battlefield 2 Demo is an interesting case. They encourage players to make mods and offer easy incorporation of mods into their games.

Are you allowed to sell them?

mods? i believe not. it's like that because it's still part of the BF2Demo game and you're basically selling a part of what they already own. Besides, the demo is free.

no game will allow you to sell mods without a license.

even if all the content is your own, you're still using their engine.
