If so, my pokemon platinum game freezes up imediately after I press start at the opening screen (which works). The debugger tells me that the file is to large and unsupported. Is there any way to fix this? I'm using no$gba emulator.

Been a while since I have used one but normally for some pokemon games you have to change from like 64bit to 32 bit or other way around.
