So, I'm getting a new laptop for my Birthday and would like to upgrade the specs within a price range of 400$.

So far this is what I'm being offered:

Inspiron Mini 10v

OS: Windows XP SP3*
Processor: Intel Atom Processor N270 (1.6GHz/533Mhz FSB/512K cache)*
Memory: 1GB DDR2 SDRAM*
Video Card: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950*
Hard Drive: 160 GB, 5400RPM SATA
Wireless: Wireless 802.11g (1397) Mini Card
Camera: Integrated 1.3M Pixel Webcam
Battery: 24WHr Lithium-Ion Battery (3-cell)
Bluetooth: Bluetooth 2.1 module with EDR
Monitor: 10.1" Widescreen Display (1024x600)*

If I can find any laptop better around the same budget (400$), I can have it.

* = Things I want to improve

Processor: I'm not really happy with the processor, and would like to get at least duo.

Memory: Would like to upgrade this to about 3GB.

Video Card: Again, would like to improve it.

Monitor: 10" is way to small for me to work with.

I'm planning to upgrade the Operating System to Windows 7.

I'm going to need this laptop to play games, but nothing too fancy. So I want a pretty decent processor.

Now, I'm not too familiar with all the different components, but I was wondering if it would be possible to build my own laptop within this price range? If not, what should I get. The whole laptop is 340$. Should I buy it and upgrade it all?

Thanks in advance.

Just so you know, there isn't much you can upgrade in a laptop, or even a netbook as the one shown above. And for $400, I don't think you'll get a decent laptop either.

That's true. I've been looking into it and I can get a very decent Dell Studio 15 laptop for 530 pounds. A bit over the budget but I'm sure I can convince my mother.

Yea, the most you could upgrade would be the ram and possibly HDD
IT also depends if its just for casual usage, no gaming

Laptops are pretty tricky to upgrade. You have to fit everything tight and snug, there is hardly any empty space, and the fitting the case and the wiring is really frustrating.

What the shit? This is a dell? Man fuck that. I have an acer aspire one and it had the same thing when i got it. exact same specs. Only 300 bucks. Its a mini, yes, but i game on it all the same. Now if this one can handle more then 1.5gb ram buy it, if not, get an acer aspire ONE. i changed it to windows 7 and put in a gb stick to make it 1.5 max as its a mini. I play plenty of games on it as long as they can cooperate with T&L /vertex SW based power.

What kind of games? Because honestly I need a system that will be good to have a couple of games like Spore and maybe Portal, and I also need to have about 20-40gb of space for documentation. I need something that will last a while and at the same time have pretty decent speed.

That's pretty decent.
Since your first choice was a Dell mini which is a netbook

How about a Compaq mini 311?
In the US it's called the HP mini 311.

Thanks, but that has the exact same specs as the Dell mini. Also, I don't particularly like mini laptops.

Ghz is 1.6. :\
I'd probably need to buy an external hard drive eventually if I bought that with only 160gb.

Even if you don't want it, but
did you even look at the specs carefully?
