My laptop has been updating for the past 2-3 hours. Is this normal for a computer that was recently formated?

what OS do you have?
if it's an older one like XP it's probably just updating to the newest drivers and stuff

It is normal because it is updating everything on your machine.

What OS you have?

It really shouldn't be unless you reformatted from a disc.

Unless your Vista has no service packs, install SP1 and SP2 will take quite some time.

Tip: download vista Service Pack standalone version and install directly from your computer. Disable the automatic restart option.

This is so Vista will install SP first and then configure it instead of
install/configure/restart, install/configure/restart.

I have SP1. How can I disable it so it doesn't install/configure/restart over and over? Because that's exactly what it's doing

It takes like 5 hoursish to install all the updates if you reformatted soon as its done make sure to backup so you don't have to do it next time it craps out

Stop the auto updates and install SP2 manually, then.
