HD monitors are fine, but they're still lower than a standard 1280*800 panel if they're only 720p

Also, would my graphics ingame go worse if I use a screen that big? I guess it would, but would I be able to play everything on medium with a HD4850? (mainly the CoD series, TF2 and L4D)

at that res, you can turn off any kind of antialias and not feel a difference...

turn of AA, keep everything high (if you can handle that)

What the shit.

What do you mean by "graphics ingame go worse"? You say that as if a bigger screen, regardless of resolution, is going to take more processing power and therefor "reduce your in game settings"... no. That's plain retarded.

Your graphics card produces a video signal at a certain resolution, frequency, and color depth. Whether or not a monitor or TV is plugged into the graphics card, it is still producing that signal. It doesn't make ANY difference to the graphics card how big the monitor is, what display technology it uses or even whether or not it is even there. The graphics card just produces its signal that can be displayed on any screen that can accept the input, and it doesn't make any difference whether your screen is 20" or 50 feet... a 640x480 signal at 60 fps with 32 bit color depth is going to take the same amount of processing power no matter what display device you are sending to.

I mean honestly, do you not see how the TV can power itself? Why would you need a better graphics card to get a bigger screen? Maybe you need a better card to get higher detail, but a bigger screen does NOT mean higher detail... it means the same amount of detail, blurred/stretched out across a bigger space.

Now about the antialiasing issue.

Exactly how low of a resolution do you have to have before antialiasing becomes effective in your opinion? Honestly antialiasing starts looking worse as the resolution drastically decreases. But I can tell you with all honesty that at 1920x1200 on a 24" screen, antialiasing makes a bigger difference than any other in game setting, other than texture resolution. I've never had a 2560x1600 monitor to test on but I'm willing to bet you will still be able to notice jagged edges unless you are using the minimum size for that resolution (30" screen) and sitting at quite a distance.

Well, if I'm going to play on the 1920*1080 res.
Right now I'm on a 1280*1024 res.

Thank goodness it's just I've seen a few people on this board who have HIGHLY suggested that they think graphics card power has anything to do with how big of a monitor they can use (considering physical size/power consumption only).

Now since your question is "If I raise my resolution setting, wont I have to decrease my other settings also?" Then the answer is an obvious yes.

It's kinda like how you can open all the programs on your computer, but not run them all at the same time.

You can turn up any setting to max in game, but probably not all at once unless you have a powerful enough graphics card.

But with an HD4850 you should be fine... most new games will let you select almost maxed out settings with that card (although personally I prefer nvidia)

Can depend on what you're bound by. As resolution increases, so do fillrate and bandwidth requirements... but maybe you'll end up shader bound?

@op:
Just be sure to check for a game mode or equivalent on your TV. Many do post-processing which introduces lag. Input lag is not fun.

Yes it will work fine, but you'll have to deal with the lower pixel density. When dealing with computers, I don't see any reason to ever go for a bigger screen without adding more resolution, but to each his own I guess.

You didn't quote the rest of my post, where I elaborated that it is of course possible that you don't have to reduce other settings if your graphics card is powerful enough.
