To add to what you said:
Sharpening alone doesn't give depth, you could also make one part lighter and the other darker, you could also make one part blurry and the other sharper, and some other stuff, IIRC.

Yeah but sharpening takes less than 30 seconds to explain something. Maybe less than 15.
